Take a Break

“If we’re seedless watermelons, where did I come from?”

******

Odd job

Since he was first to arrive at his high-tech company one morning, the president answered the phone. When the caller asked for the field engineer, the president explained that it was before regular business hours, and asked if he could help. "What's your job there?" asked the caller. "I'm the president," he replied. There was a pause. Then the caller said, "I'll call back later. I need to talk to someone who knows something."

Nice going

A rookie police officer was out for his first ride in a cruiser with an experienced partner. A call came in telling them to disperse some people who were loitering. The officers drove to the street and observed a small crowd standing on a corner. The rookie rolled down his window and said, “Let’s get off the corner, people.” A few glances, but no one moved, so he barked again, “Let’s get off that corner…Now!” Intimidated, the group began to leave, casting puzzled stares in his direction. Proud of his first official act, the rookie turned to his partner and asked, “Well, how did I do?” “Pretty good,” chuckled the vet, “especially since this is a bus stop.”

Mystery malady

“When I press my forehead with my finger, it really hurts,” a patient complained to his doc-tor. “And when I do the same to my cheek, it’s also painful. Even if I press on my stomach, it hurts. What can it be?” Stumped, the physician sent him to a specialist. The man returned to his doctor the following week. “What did the specialist say?” the doctor asked.“I have a broken finger.”

Wiedenmann Super 500

"Only the Best" is the guiding principle that has led to the tremendous success of German turf manufacturer Wiedenmann GmBH.   Founded in 1964 by Gertrud and Georg Wiedenmann, the company stays focused on consistency and reliability while designing and building some of the leading deep tine aerifiers and most versatile verticut/sweeper on the market today.  Now managed by Gertrud and Georg's sons Jurgen, Horst and Uwe Wiedenmann, the business has had tremendous success in the tricky conditions of the American Southwest as they’ve expanded to locations throughout the world.

The focus product of this issue is Wiedenmann's unique Super 500, a heavy-duty sweeper/verticutter/flail mower collection system all in one.  Did I mention it can also pulverize aeration plugs?  The machine can be configured as a low cost solution to sweeping and collecting leaves, clippings and other materials.  The optional multi-purpose sweeper head allows for verticutting and flail mowing while collecting clippings into a 3.5 cubic yard hopper with a high dump reach up to 80". The parallelogram-guided sweeper head ensures that implements maintain an optimal working position at all times. This is a great advantage on undulating surfaces. You can select between the brush-type and the multi-purpose sweeper head. Your choice of sweeper head depends on your requirements. The multi-purpose sweeper head comes standard with an additional center-mounted roller to prevent scalping on uneven turf.

The multi-purpose sweeper head can be equipped with various implements for a variety of applications.  The implements are manufactured from wear resistant special grade steel and mounted in pendulum fashion. This ensures excellent work results over the full working width. For verticutting work, you can choose between cutting blade spacings of 3/4", 1 1/2" or 2 1/4".  Implement changing is simple and can be done without tools.

The high dump feature allows the container to be discharged in any desired lifting height up to a max. of 83". This provides significant time savings since, where low overhead loading heights are required, the container does not initially have to be lifted to highest position to be emptied.

Learning to Ask the Right Question
When Purchasing a Tractor

In today's economy using your budget dollars wisely is critical. Sometimes we can get confused by the different manufacturer's specifications that can mislead us into purchasing a tractor that might in the long run actually be more expensive; when you calculate the operation and efficiency of the unit.

If you're writing a specification for a utility tractor, you need to know how to compare models from all the different manufacturers.

Let's take a moment to review four critical areas that need to be evaluated in order to purchase the right tractor. It is important to ask the right questions up front before any specs or written. . . it could make the difference between a tractor you keep for years, and one you're ready to get rid of in a couple of years.

At the end of the day it is about purchasing the right tractor that will save you money by buying the most efficient and reliable tractor available.

AA Equipment sells tractors! It's our business, and we do it better than anybody else.

WEIGHT

When you're comparing utility tractors, heavier is better. Why? More weight typically means heavier, more durable components and construction. We'll show you what we mean...and what to look for.

HORSEPOWER

Think one 45-horsepower tractor is the same as the next? Maybe, or maybe not… All horsepower isn't created equal, so you need to know how a tractor's horsepower is measured before you can compare tractors of similar power ratings.

Comfortable Controls

A lever that seems a little out of place during a quick demonstration might turn out to be a serious inconvenience after a few hours in the cab. Make sure you give the control layout a test as you're taking a spin around the dealer's lot.

Economy PTO

Other manufacturers may say they have it, but only John Deere offers a true economy PTO...one that spins at a full 540 RPM, even at reduced engine speed. Find out what we...and they...mean when we talk about this fuel- and money-saving feature.

Getting Ready for the Big One.

Preparing for a 550 mile race in the middle of August is no small matter. That's just what Scott and his race team are doing as they gear up for the TSCO Vegas to Reno Race, on August 18th-20th.

At the time of our last newsletter, the team had started to tear down the vehicle to the frame, so that it could be powder coated and to check for areas that may need attention.Scott noted that the team was in the process of reassembling the vehicle “every part that goes back on the Gator needs to be inspected before being installed on the vehicle.” Since that time, they have been carefully inspecting every part of the Gator as they re-assemble it for the race (see photos below). Vegas to Reno will be the longest off-road race yet for this Gator, and we wish Scott and his team the best of luck.

Going Great Depths in Aeration

A healthy turf is the pride of every superintendent. However, in addition to having a green and healthy turf, there are also technical requirements which healthy turf should possess. The turf should be water-permeable to reduce downtime caused by weather conditions and a healthy turf should have a high number of plants per square inch. In order to have such a healthy professional turf, one has to provide the proper growing conditions.  The most important prerequisite for healthy turf is proper soil conditions, consisting of approximately 45% minerals, 25% air pores, 25 % water pores, and 5% organic matter.

However, quite often the number of air pores is reduced due to compaction and bad water infiltration, thereby causing saturation, meaning that the roots of the grass cannot breathe since they are basically drowned in water. Although regular aeration is performed, these same symptoms of compaction can be seen on many turfs. The reason is that most aeration machines work at a depth of about 3 to 5 inches, whereas compaction is quite often found in the deeper layers.  Consistent aeration to the same depth may cause an additional layer of compaction, which is sometimes referred to as a black layer.  At this black layer, roots, as well as water, air, and nutrients, cannot extend any deeper into the soil.

This is why a program using deep aeration is desired, thus aerifying and decompacting down to a maximum of 16 inches.  A superintendent was once overheard saying, “My old aerifier went three inches deep and the root system stopped there. My next aerifier went four inches deep and the roots stopped there. Now I started deep tine aerifying ten inches and my roots seem to be stopping there. What can I do now?” Someone then responded, “And what’s the problem with ten inch roots?” Given the choice, go deep. While it’s true that the root system usually stops where the aeration tine stops, at ten inches deep, the root system will support a healthy stand of turf. With a deeper root system from deep tine aerification, irrigation intervals can be lengthened, fertilizer applications last longer, and more oxygen is introduced into the soil.

One major advantage to the newer deep machines is the ability to easily change the angle of entry, thus increasing the amount of soil displacement at the maximum depth.  In addition, with the use of coring tines, soil profiles can be exchanged deep into the surface.  Also, coring tines offer some elimination of thatch and a reduction in soil compaction.  Solid tines do a good job of fracturing the soil, especially when adjusting the angle of entry, without the mess of cleaning up the cores. Another valuable tool that deep tine aerifiers offer is a variety of needle tines and hole spacing with multi-tine holders.  Superintendents are partial to these tines because needle tines offer minimal surface disruption and minimal effects on ball roll.  Needle tines open the surface, which can become sealed by irrigation practices, while providing all the benefits associated with decompacting the soil.

In the past, deep tine aerifiers were somewhat slow, requiring a creeper gear, and were somewhat difficult to operate.  The manufacturers of deep machines have done a good job of improving the technology, thus making these machines faster, which eliminates the need for a creeper gear in most cases. Deep machines are also much more user friendly. One major advantage to the newer deep machines is the ability to change the angle of entry that increases the amount of soil displacement at the maximum depth.

Today, you have more aerification choices than ever before. A good suggestion is to use a mixed bag of tine types and sizes, and vary the depth of aerification to avoid layering and allowing for deep root structure, which creates proper air, water, and nutrient exchange.
